Perking Up Worn Furniture with Slip Covers
Your furniture can have a longer life if you use slip covers. They allow you to go on using the furniture long after its upholstery has passed its prime. There is no need to throw out your furniture, when you can use slip covers to perk it up.

On many couches or chairs, the fabric on the arms becomes frayed or tattered. You don’t like to even look at it. This worn fabric may even be uncomfortable to rest your arms on. You might wish you could get rid of the piece of furniture.

However, many pieces of furniture have these problems, and yet have solid construction that is still perfectly good. It is a shame to just toss these items out on the curb. If they can be salvaged by using slip covers, they can continue to be an important part of your home décor.

You can use slip covers, such as couch slipcovers, to hide the worn spots on these. This will not only mask the unpleasant appearance. It will also give smoothness to the frayed fabric. This will allow you to sit on the couch without rubbing your arms raw on the worn fabric. This is where slip covers come in.

Perhaps, your chair’s colors or patterns have simply faded. In this case, there is nothing wrong at all with the structure or comfort of the furniture. It just looks drab because the colors aren’t as bright as they once were.

You can use a chair slipcover to make it like new. It will be just as comfortable, if not more so. At the same time, you can add any color or pattern you choose from the large selection of slip covers available to you. It won’t be the same as your old upholstery; it could even be better.

Sometimes, furniture comes to you through a family member. You want to keep the furniture to remember the person who once had it. However, the upholstery looks like it came from the dark ages. There may even be splits in the fabric.

So, next time you are considering disposing of a piece of furniture, ask yourself, “Is this furniture really unsalvageable?” If find that the answer is “no,” then you might want to check out the choices of slip covers that are open to you. You might be able to keep a piece of furniture that has served you well over a number of years.

Plus and Cons of Slip Covers
There are some excellent reasons to buy and use slip covers. Some of these are obvious and some are more unexpected. There may also be reasons not to buy them. Before you buy, think about their pluses and cons.

Plus: Buying and using them is less expensive than having your furniture reupholstered. You pay a relatively small price and put the slip covers on yourself.

Con: The covers are not made with your exact pieces of furniture in mind as they would be in a reupholstering ship. In such a shop, your furniture would be measured for a custom fit. With slip covers, you get the same product as anyone with a similar piece of furniture gets.

Plus: Although the ready made slip cover will not be custom made for your particular piece of furniture, they should fit well. Modern covers, especially stretch slip covers, are designed to fit most styles of furniture. With a little tucking and strapping, standard covers can fit even smaller sofas or chairs.

Con: You have to put them on for yourself. You may feel intimidated by the task if you don’t have someone to do it for you. You may find yourself putting off the job, or leaving them in their shipping packages permanently.

Plus: They should come with explicit instructions about how to put them on your furniture. You will be told where to begin putting them on the furniture, and where to pull the material and tuck it in. It is a fairly easy process, and it doesn’t have to be done often. Stretch slip covers are the easiest to put on.

Plus: Slip covers are usually washable. You can use them without worry about getting them dirty from normal wear. They can be spot cleaned or put in for a complete wash. They are the ultimate in practicality.

Con: You might not find slip covers in the same designer fabrics, colors, and patterns as you can find new furniture. There might also be some different choices for reupholstering fabric. If you have something particular in mind, you might not be able to find it.

Plus: These covers actually come in a wide variety of colors and fabrics these days. You can choose the one you like today, and then change it in six months. This is something you would probably never do with new furniture or reupholstering, because the cost would be prohibitive.

Don’t make a snap decision not to buy slip covers until you have considered the pluses and cons. You might realize that they are just what you are looking for.

Dining chairs aren’t the first pieces of furniture people think of using slipcovers on. Most people would go to the expense of having their dining chairs reupholstered, or buying new ones altogether before they would think of it. Yet, you can get ready made covers for dining chairs.

There are dining room chair covers that encase only the seat and back. These slipcovers are small and convenient for any dining chairs. You can put them on to protect the upholstered seats. Or, you can apply them to the chairs to enhance the décor.

These slipcovers cost in the neighborhood of $30 to $50 each. However, most are extremely durable, and many are machine washable. If you can find these covers with some kind of clips to affix the slipcovers to the chairs, you will be happier with them. They will stay on better.

You can use these slipcovers for special dinners only, or keep them on the chairs at all times. They are very versatile because they are so easy to put on and take off. They give your dining room a finished look that might lead you to recall the décor of a fine restaurant.

White and off-white are popular colors because they are traditional for covered dining chairs. However, there is an array of colors to choose from. If the colors in your carpet are a mixture of grays, white, and black, you can still go with white, or you can try gray.

If your dining room walls are painted with a light yellow color, you can choose a darker yellow. Or, you could choose another light color that would complement the light yellow of the walls. For instance, you could have the slipcovers for your dining chairs in a pastel orange. Your dining room would be reminiscent of refreshing sherbet!

There is another kind of slipcovers you can get for your dining chairs. These are the same for the back and the seat. The difference is that they go on down below the seat to the floor.

These are elegant and formal covers. They will only go well in the most formal of dining rooms. Or, you can bring them out on special occasions for that added “wow-factor.” They can make any guest feel honored and esteemed.

Although, you may never have given slipcovers for dining chairs a single thought before, you may find that you like the idea. With a bit of an investment and proper care, your dining chair covers should last you a long time.
