When you’re decorating with color there are some basic color terms that may come in handy:
•The hue of a color is the basic color. For example, blue is the hue in light blue and dark blue.
• Tone describes the color's density and reflective quality. Tone is important when choosing a color scheme.
•The value of a color describes the amount of white or black in the color. The value ranges from light to dark on a gray scale.
•The saturation of a color refers to its pureness and boldness.
Think about how you like to feel in your home and what you presently have. Want a little pop in the room? Go with a dash of color with reds or blues. Want a calmer, relaxed feel? Go with neutrals. Or there’s always white for a contemporary or even beachy look.
Primary colors – reds, blues, and yellows tend to give an added “pop” to a room. Want a hot, sexy contemporary look? Go with a black and white palate with just the right amount of lipstick red for effect.
A very common train of thought is to start out with a neutral “canvas” with beiges, off-whites, and naturals and browns to have a relaxed, sophisticated comfort, and use that as a base for adding in splashes of color. With browns people tend to add pastels or light blues for dashes of colors that still calm the senses.
You can accessorize to provide your own distinctive touch – express your personality through accessories for your own personal spin. Some people like a low key look, and others seek a bold, fun and color filled scene to heighten the senses. If you have artwork, you may want to bring in colors from your pictures into your textiles and furnishings via pillows, throws or even through a chair and rug.

•Most people do go with neutrals for a relaxed, sophisticated comfort.
•Burgundies and reds however provide a more contemporary look.
•Denims are gaining resurgence. With denim, you can create either a romantic or casual look to a room depending on the other decorating components.
•Shades of light to darker greens serve a variety of decorating styles. Prints are done in multiple colors in special looks also work and many people and have coordinating pillows for their basic furniture.
But remember, there really are no hard and fast rules that say you must use a specified color scheme.
