If your other furniture is done in subdued colors, a darker colored accent chair will make an astonishing difference in the room. It creates the illusion that the accent chair is heavier than the other furniture. This can ground your décor and add a feeling of more substance to it.
Small accent chairs can get lost in the large expanses of fabric in the other furniture pieces. Using light colored slipcovers for the accent chairs will make them seem bigger. This is especially true if you have used darker colors for the other furniture.
You can add an area of interest by putting slipcovers on your accent chairs. You can do this by using covers with a different texture than the other covers in the room. For instance, you could use smooth covers throughout the room, and then use a chenille cover on the accent chair. This will bring the accent chair out and give it a personality all its own.
Accent chairs are often placed just beyond the entrance in the hallway of a home. They can provide a welcoming spot for visitors to wait for the different people of the house. If you use regal colors and fabrics for your slipcovers here, your guests will be impressed, as well.
A deep royal blue is good for this set-up. Any deep color of slipcovers will do, but the cool colors command the most respect. So, blues and greens are both fine. Either silky textures or classically designed raised textures can add to the effect. Hang an oval mirror between two of these chairs and the setting is complete.
If you have a dressing room off of your master bath, it might be a good place for an accent chair. The colors of slipcovers you use for such chairs will vary upon who uses the dressing room. If it is only used by a woman, you might want to cover the accent chair with a traditionally female color, like rose.
Use your accent chairs in any type of arrangement and setting you wish. You will find that, by using the right slipcovers, you can make an area look out of the ordinary. It just takes a little imagination.
